How a sinful structure is destroyed

You Don’t Have to Tear Down the Whole Structure

Have you ever wondered why someone can struggle with the same sin, wound, fear, or destructive pattern for years—and then suddenly, something changes?

What if lasting transformation is not primarily about trying harder to change what you do?

What if it is about receiving understanding from the Lord that changes what you believe?

In Re-Forming: Transformation Through Reconstruction, I describe Nine Progressions through which structures are formed within us:

Suggestion → Focus → Understanding → Agreement → Gathering → Action → Experience → Repetition → Operation → Fruit

These progressions can form a structure in which either sin or Christ operates.

But there is an important difference between the two.

The substance of a structure formed by Christ is faith.

The substance of a sinful structure is deceit.

And that means the enemy has a problem.

His structure is only as strong as the lie holding it together.

The Lie Is the Keystone

Think of an ancient stone arch.

At the top of the arch is the keystone. It holds the other stones in their proper relationship. Remove the keystone, and the integrity of the structure is lost.

I believe something similar happens spiritually.

A sinful structure often begins with a suggestion that contains a lie.

Maybe the suggestion is:

You are worthless.

God has abandoned you.

You will always be this way.

You need this sin to feel better.

You cannot forgive.

You are what happened to you.

The person begins focusing on that suggestion. Over time, a false understanding develops. Agreement follows. Then the person begins gathering evidence that appears to confirm what they believe.

Actions follow.

Experiences reinforce it.

Repetition strengthens it.

Eventually, what began as a suggestion becomes an operation.

And operation eventually produces fruit.

But beneath all of it is something surprisingly fragile:

a lie.

Jesus said:

“You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” —John 8:32

Notice that Jesus did not say you would struggle with the lie until you eventually overpower it.

He pointed to truth.

What Happens When the Lord Gives Understanding?

This is where transformation can happen with astonishing speed.

For years, we may try to change the fruit.

We fight the behavior.

We discipline ourselves.

We make promises.

We resist.

We try again.

But what if we have been pulling leaves from a tree while leaving the root untouched?

When the Lord gives understanding, He can expose the original lie.

Suddenly, you don’t merely know intellectually that something is false.

You see it.

You understand.

And once you truly see the lie for what it is, you can no longer agree with it in the same way.

The lie loses its authority.

Agreement is broken.

The keystone is removed.

And when the keystone comes out, everything that depended upon it begins to collapse.

You don’t have to dismantle every stone individually.

Remove what was holding the structure together.

This may help explain why some transformations seem almost instantaneous.

Someone can struggle with something for twenty years, encounter the Lord in a particular area, receive understanding—and suddenly what once seemed overwhelmingly powerful has lost its hold.

What happened?

Perhaps they didn’t suddenly become stronger.

Perhaps the structure became weaker because the lie holding it together was exposed.

The Goal of Healing Ministry

This changes how we should think about healing ministry.

Whether we are talking about inner healing, prayer ministry, deliverance, counseling, discipleship, or simply sitting with another believer who is hurting, I believe one of our primary goals should be:

Help the person encounter the Lord and receive understanding from Him.

We are not trying to manufacture their freedom.

We are not trying to talk them into being healed.

We are not simply giving them more information.

We are helping create an opportunity for them to hear, see, recognize, and understand what the Lord wants to reveal.

Because one moment of understanding from Christ can expose a lie that has influenced decades of someone’s life.

This is why healing ministry should ultimately lead people toward Jesus Himself.

The minister isn’t the healer.

The method isn’t the healer.

The process isn’t the healer.

Christ is.

Our responsibility is not to become someone’s source of truth but to help them encounter the One who is Truth.

But God Doesn’t Leave an Empty Space

There is another side to this.

God doesn’t merely dismantle.

He reconstructs.

The lie is exposed.

The sinful structure collapses.

But now something new can be formed.

Paul wrote:

“…until Christ is formed in you.” —Galatians 4:19

This is where faith enters the picture.

If deceit is the substance supporting the sinful structure, then faith is the substance of the structure Christ forms within us.

Hebrews 11:1 says:

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” —Hebrews 11:1 KJV

God doesn’t simply want you free from what was formed through deception.

He wants Christ formed in its place.

That is reconstruction.

And perhaps we can summarize the process this way:

A lie creates deception. Deception produces agreement. Agreement allows a structure to form. The structure gives sin a place to operate.

Then Christ enters:

Truth brings understanding. Understanding exposes the lie. The lie loses agreement. The structure collapses. Faith provides substance for something new. Christ is formed.

That is why understanding is so important.

We can spend years fighting what grew from a lie.

Or we can allow the Lord to show us the truth.

Understanding removes what the lie formed.

Faith gives substance to what Christ is forming.

And that is not merely behavior modification.

That is transformation through reconstruction.

This could also make a strong newsletter series: the next one could focus entirely on “Why Understanding Can Accomplish What Years of Trying Could Not.”

Absolutely. Here’s a newsletter that develops that idea while fitting the message of your Re-Forming ministry. Understanding Renews the Mind One of the most common statements heard in Christian circles is, “You need to renew your mind.” That is true. But have you ever stopped to ask how the mind is renewed? Many believers assume that renewing the mind means trying harder to think better thoughts, memorizing more verses, or continually reminding themselves what the Bible says. While each of...

Sin Doesn’t Just Make You Guilty. It Makes You Less Than Who You Were Created to Be. When most Christians think about sin, they think about guilt. They think about breaking God’s law, disappointing God, or deserving judgment. While all of those are true, I have become convinced that they are not the Bible’s primary emphasis. Again and again, Scripture describes something even more tragic. Sin corrupts. It slowly destroys the person God created you to become. The Bible repeatedly says that sin...
