understanding renews your mind

Absolutely. Here’s a newsletter that develops that idea while fitting the message of your Re-Forming ministry.

Understanding Renews the Mind

One of the most common statements heard in Christian circles is, “You need to renew your mind.”

That is true.

But have you ever stopped to ask how the mind is renewed?

Many believers assume that renewing the mind means trying harder to think better thoughts, memorizing more verses, or continually reminding themselves what the Bible says. While each of those practices has value, they are not, in themselves, what renews the mind.

The mind is renewed through understanding.

Think about it for a moment.

Have you ever believed something your entire life, only to discover one piece of information that changed everything? You did not force yourself to think differently. The new understanding replaced the old one. Your thinking changed because your understanding changed.

The same principle operates spiritually.

Jesus never intended the Christian life to be sustained by willpower. Throughout Scripture, He continually brought people into understanding.

He opened the eyes of the blind.

He explained the parables to His disciples.

He reasoned from the Scriptures.

After His resurrection, He “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45).

Notice what happened. Jesus did not tell them to renew their own minds. He gave them understanding, and their minds were renewed.

This is why Paul prayed that believers would receive “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation” and that “the eyes of your heart” would be enlightened (Ephesians 1:17–18). Paul understood that transformation comes when Christ gives understanding.

This truth has enormous implications.

Many Christians spend years trying to overcome sin by managing their thoughts. They battle the same temptations, the same fears, the same insecurities, and the same destructive patterns. They become exhausted because they believe transformation depends on trying harder.

But what if the missing ingredient is not more effort?

What if it is greater understanding?

Whenever Jesus reveals truth, a lie loses its foundation. The old way of thinking begins to collapse because it can no longer support itself. Truth doesn’t merely add information—it reconstructs the way we see reality.

That is why Jesus said,

“You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:32)

He did not say that trying harder would make us free.

He said truth would.

Truth understood changes us from the inside out.

This is one of the central messages of Re-Forming.

Transformation does not begin with human effort. It begins when Christ enlightens the heart. Understanding leads to agreement. Agreement shapes our actions. Repeated actions become established patterns until Christ is formed within us.

Renewal, then, is not something we manufacture.

It is something we receive.

As you spend time with the Lord this week, don’t simply ask Him to help you think differently.

Ask Him to help you understand.

Because when Christ gives understanding, the mind is renewed, and lasting transformation becomes possible.

Sin Doesn’t Just Make You Guilty. It Makes You Less Than Who You Were Created to Be. When most Christians think about sin, they think about guilt. They think about breaking God’s law, disappointing God, or deserving judgment. While all of those are true, I have become convinced that they are not the Bible’s primary emphasis. Again and again, Scripture describes something even more tragic. Sin corrupts. It slowly destroys the person God created you to become. The Bible repeatedly says that sin...
